I can't say I know for sure how I came up with this idea, but 4x9 kind of stuck in my head and I had some erm... thoughts about the real life implications of what Sam did to himself in those months and how they'd affect him later on since that stuff doesn't just go away. God, does that make any sense? Likely not. *scuffs feet* The title is from "Four Quartets: Burnt Norton" by T.S. Eliot.

( Sam sits in a chair and watches Dean sleeping as he wiles away the sleepless hours of the night, the sounds of the highway outside acting as background music to Dean’s chorus of soft snores. The light in the room is filtered, a washed out dingy yellow-orange from the sodium arc lights of the motel’s parking lot. Licking his lips absently, Sam lets his eyes trail over the exposed line of Dean’s naked back and mentally restores his body back to its former state. The skin is too smooth; too even now. )
